Finally! An intelligent scale that no longer just tells you how overweight you are has arrived. The Wii Fit is here to help you shed a few inches off and make work outs, well, somewhat fun. Nintendo’s newest game hardware has hit the market and a new era in gaming has begun. Could this be that Nintendo is capitalizing on the negative publicity video gaming often gets in the media? Maybe. But no one can argue the concept by itself is quite exciting. Now parent and child will fight about the video game, but this time it’ll be over whose turn it is. And this may be the one game system that promotes itself as being good for your health (barring injury of course). And it just might be what you need (after partying the night before) to sharpen your senses once again and clear your head.
The Wii Fit is appealing to a wide range of folks. It seems especially appealing to the novice and non-gamer types because its interfaces are quite simple. There aren’t a trillion buttons to push, and though it is fairly easy to learn, it is very challenging to master. The excitement brewing in adults over this video game phenomenon may be sliding under the noses of unsuspecting kids. Certainly, it is apparent to those of us that don’t live in a simulated world that Wii and future generations of gaming systems will create a real world scenario of parents and children enjoying great adventures together in the living room. Or single people screaming at their TVs instead of just their cats -all the while huffing and puffing. All right, so that might be a bit of a stretch. And speaking of stretching, the Wii Fit markets itself as a great tool for various different work outs, hence making you “fit.” It’s a smart, sleek looking piece of hardware capable of detecting slight shifts in weight, so yes, you have to move your feet. Tilt a little to the left or right to head soccer balls, play ski jump by crouching, and of course the body movement in these games is much like exercising. And before anyone starts lamenting about the risks of injury, just remember if there isn’t any risk, it probably isn’t much fun. And this is supposed to be a fun work out. Ok, so it isn’t quite like running or being on a treadmill, but who has fun doing that?
