IOTA, Local Music, Fries...

A good way to start this off is to write about Arlington VA’s IOTA Club & Café. Arguably, the halved Wilson Blvd. storefront (part chic café, part bar) is the best small music venue on the DC area. Plus, they have killer fries and keep their Christmas lights up, year round.  

An avid supporter of both local and touring musicians, charity shows, and the local poetry scene, a night spent at IOTA is probably one of the best ways time can be spent. Additionally, Wednesday nights are devoted to the most attentive and well attended Open Mic. night in the area, run by local songwriter Mike Maloney and, the first Monday of every month, to The Federal Reserve, a collection of the most respected DC musicians.

This Friday the superbly painted brick walls host Everyone But Pete and Justin Trawick with an acoustic Honor By August, three excellent bands to enjoy a Friday night with. Tickets are $10 at the doors. With fries, that's $14.75, plus tax.

ANAMIDE's Rockin' CD Release Party! Carroll County’s favorite local band, Anamide, released their new cd on December 14, 2007, and to celebrate the release, the band played a cd release show at Rams Head Live along with 7 Layers Deep and a few other notable local bands, but it was clear that the bulk of the crowd was there in full force to check out the Anamide boys, and they played a strong hour long set that covered all the bases, included most of their new cd as well as their usual closing Pantera Medley of “This Love/Walk”. Philly Glam Invades Baltimore If you happen to remember the old Thunderdome, which is located in Brooklyn, you might remember that it was a great place to see good rock shows and that the club was known for booking both local and national acts .. then the club changed hands, it was remodeled and then switched over to a dance club, then they started to book rock bands again, then they changed over to a dance club again...hopefully that wasn’t a confusing mess! Flash forward to today: Club Mate has rock bands every Friday and if you haven't been to Club Mate, the decor is interesting. They have stripper cages on both sides of the stage, the club is decorated with trippy designs and it has this retro vibe, but very modern feel..it’s a cool club and I still see it as the old Thunderdome, which was a great rock n roll venue. On Monday, November 12, 2007, The Cult played Rams Head Live in Baltimore and it was an even that was sponsored by Jagermeister, and as part of the Jager themed night, the show was opened by a Jager sponsored/supported local act, and the lucky act for this tour was none other than The Niki Barr Band!

Front woman Niki Barr is a charismatic singer/songwriter and don’t let her small demeanor fool you...she has a shy presence offstage and a very girl next door quality to her, but onstage, Niki Barr is a powerful singer that almost glows while she’s exuding all of her energy via her music while on stage, and whether she’s strumming her guitar or singing, she’s pouring her heart into her performance and you really can’t fake that!
