Fishnet Stalkers: Keepin' Baltimore Rock N Roll Dangerous!

Sleazy, dirty rock and roll. That's what the Fishnet Stalkers are good at, and it showed at the Ottobar show last week.

Do you remember when Rock N Roll was dirty, kinda sleazy, had a serious attitude and was all about pissing people off, rather than making radio friendly songs about being depressed? I know that’s a question many people can’t answer, but if you are familiar with the gritty, post punk, glam scene that spawn from New York in the late '70s and went on through till the mid '80s, you will know what I am talking about...a scene that was created by bands like The Ramones, NY Dolls, KISS, and even early Blondie, where it was as important to look good as it was to play good. Maryland’s own The Fishnet Stalkers definitely bring to mind all of those kinds of bands that put on an interesting show, visually while also delivering their own form of dirty rock n roll that’s not totally unique, but, to the Maryland music scene, it is a rarity!

The Fishnet Stalkers opened for Supersuckers on February 7, 2008 and I got there early to review the bands set. What I saw was five guys who totally fed off each other, gave 110% onstage, and their music was very simple, basic rock n roll, the likes of which Chuck Berry kinda created back in the day, yet it was played with punk rock energy and heavy metal volume ... that’s what makes the Fishnet Stalker’s sound so unique on the Baltimore scene, because they are not trying to be modern, they are not trying to be nu-metal, they are not trying to add elements of rap into their music, they are staying true to their roots, they are guitar, bass, drums and vocals. What the band delivers onstage comes across really sincere and it is refreshing to see a band deliver a real rock n roll show in a small club...what the Fishnet Stalkers bring onstage is the same vibe they have offstage..they dress the part, they live the part: they ARE pure rock n roll.

What I also find interesting about seeing a Fishnet Stalkers show is, the bands fan base is also very interesting to see. The band's fans tend to dress up and look like a rock n roll crowd too. Going to see the band, you get a very different vibe than you would from any other local Maryland band. I LOVE the style of music Fishnet Stalkers play, too. They are simple, catchy, and their sound is a mix of glam, punk and garage rock..they aren’t polished. I’d say they are a mix of early 70’s Rolling Stones meets The Stooges meets Jet...they are a rock n roll machine! If you enjoy a good rock n roll show, definitely check out the Fishnet Stalkers! I have to thank Chelsea for turning me onto the band and I wanna thank Matt Gabs for getting me in to check out their set!
