Among Wolves

Among Wolves

@ Lofi 1/12/08

Joy Frenzy talks with Among Wolves about their upcoming album and what really inspires them. Also we discuss a how Peaches and the Beach Boys formulate a boiling “cauldron” of great sound

Jason Butcher

Dave

Billy Tiedeken

Jimmy Cahill

How did you guys start?

Billy: I started out on a farm.

Really?

Billy: No, I started out in my apartment on St. Paul Street in 2004. And Jimmy and I recorded tracks on a four track with my dog. After a while of recording and playing a few shows we brought in Jason and Dave. Jay[Jason Butcher], did you contact me?

Jason: No, I'm the man, you contacted me.

Billy: Then Jay suggested Dave after going through some auditions for bass.

What are you guys working on now?

Billy: I own a puppy farm.

All: Laughing

Jimmy: I went to Prague. I'm working on my own things.

Billy: A lot of new shows. We'll be working on the new album this upcoming Febuary. I'm also working on my own stuff.

Dave: I'm in a few other projects: The Red Vines, June Star, and Vox.

Do you like playing shows or working in the studio?

Billy: Both easily.

Jason: Shows are a good release but being in the studio is great.

Billy: We've spent a lot of time there.

Jason: I mean on stage you can fuck around.

Billy: In the studio you can really work on your song.

Where are you guys originally from?

Billy and Jimmy: Cherry Hill, New Jersey

Jason: Relay, Maryland

Dave: Catonsville

Where you come from, does that inspire what you write about at all?

Jason: I think so.

Billy: No not really.

Jimmy: It is more like where I have been

Billy: and where I am now, Definitely

What influences are in your music?

Billy: The Inuit People

Jason: Spinal Tap was a big influence for me early on. During my comedic writing days. When everyone started making fun of me, that's when I took the music seriously.

Jimmy: I listen to a lot of rock and roll. And there are a few local bands.

Which local bands?

Jimmy: The Red Vines and Caleb Stine

Billy: Overall I like the Beach Boys and a lot of noise bands. I like Peaches

Do you think, because these influences contradict, that is hard to form them into a sound you like?

Billy: Yea, it is a little difficult. I think Dave's playing sounds the best.

Dave: I think Billy's singing overrides everything we do.

Jimmy: Outstanding.

Billy: We put our talents into a musical cauldron and stir it until something comes out.

Dave: Whatever comes out, comes out.

How does the writing process work?

Jimmy: I work with Billy.

Billy: Yea, Jimmy comes to me with material and we work on it together. He helps me with stuff I'm working on and we put it together. Dave and Jay really pull it together.
