As Bill Gates leaves the top spot at Microsoft, the stock market tanks, EMI lays off a couple thousand workers, and the economy dives toward recession, Coldplay brings us a new album (pardon the divulging from the editorial, but can I just say, "Yawn"? Aren't these guys nothing more than a dumbed-down and popped-out Radiohead wannabe?) called Prospekt. Private equity firm Terra Firma recently acquired EMI and just announced proposals to allow artists in the EMI stable to be supported by corporate branding.
By way of an example, picture a seminal album such as Nevermind with "brought to you by Nike" in parentheses right underneath the album title. Are we getting sick of this yet?
As rumor would have it, the tracklisting for Prospekt:
'Famous Old Painters'
'Glass Of Water'
'Lost!'
'Cemeteries of London'
'Violet Hill'
'Poppy Fields'
'42'
'Yes!' ... sponsored by Pepsi
'Leftrightleftright'
'Rainy Day'
'Prospeckt's March' .... brought to you by McDonald's

It is sad corporate america continues its assault on art and free expression. The things that made this country great are diluded and rejected in the name of capital gains. Fools are we who buy cookie-cutter music. It is no wonder the music industry is in the tank. Why should anyone care when the product being pushed is lame? We need a new Jim Morrison, Eddie Vedder, give me someone with balls. He may be out there, but he won't be backed by the big corporations since it is they and their bland ideology we are trying to run from.
