The Boxing Lesson - Wild Streaks & Windy Days

Austin, Texas' The Boxing Lesson ... I'm afraid to pull up pictures of these guys for fear I might find the singer looks like Robert Smith and the guitarist like the Edge. Depending on how old you are and what your tastes run, that could be a blessing or a curse (or both). Comparisons and musical genetics aside, the riff on the first track, "Dark Side of the Moog", hooks you from the first measure and gives you an idea what this band is all about.

The press kit's space themes are fitting, as the album leaves the atmosphere directly for a stratospheric ambience. "Lower" alternate-picks its way out of this world. The 'ground control' synthesizer of Jaylinn Davidson is all bells & whistles, monitoring the systems of the space station Boxing Lesson.

Having probed the universe for its musical secrets to put Wild Streaks & Windy Days on record, "Hopscotch & Sodapop" is a bit out of character, with its high-fructose riff and britpop vocals. Kind of like Captain Kirk and the out-of-this-world femaliens, it's cool in a strangely out-of-place sort of way that you can't quite put your finger on.

Don your space suit and prepare for zero gravity as you get strapped in for Wild Streaks & Windy Days (click to order). More of a Buzz Lightyear than Armageddon ambience, the latest from The Boxing Lesson is loaded with a vast expanse of soundscapes, layered with guitars, synths and samples that have earned the band comparisons to other eccentric artists like David Bowie and Pink Floyd.
